Where the fuck is Sturgill Simpson? Apparently, he’s been on a deserted island, trading his New Balance for some new flip-flops. Or maybe he’s been in a phone booth, exchanging his cape and changing his name.
Johnny Blue Skies, a.k.a. Sturgill Simpson, leaves his mark on his new album – Passage Du Desir. It showcases the sounds we all know he’s capable of, but with a different message. Instead of trying to find himself, he focuses on leaving the past behind and moving forward.
Losing friends, losing heroes & losing himself.
The album opens with an intro of accordion and strings, reminiscent of the French Quarters or Paris itself, where Passage Du Desir was written.. the intro builds anticipation for the album that was never going to be made. When Simpson’s voice rains down, there’s an immediate ease & comfort that fills your body & soul. Sturgill Simpson is simply one of the greatest to do it.
The second track, If The Sun Never Rises Again – drips with an R&B swagger that only Johnny Blue Skies could deliver. On the third track, Scooter Blues, he gets real and opens up on his true position: no looking back, no regrets, but maybe a desire to do it all over – just differently. Becoming someone else entirely.

After previously releasing music independently & on the verge of giving up, Cassandra found herself in an impromptu meeting w/ Elektra Records President Gregg Nadel. She performed for him in Elektra’s parking garage, where the impressive acoustics highlighted her remarkable voice. Nadel was instantly captivated by Cassandra’s talent, story, & personality. This led to a trip to Nashville to meet Dave Cobb at RCA Studios, where the deal was finalized.
“I’m using different colors. I love big seventies balladeers, I dig grunge and jazz. I grew up in & on cowboy country, so I relate to classic western storytelling. I want it to feel raw and visceral, so it hits people the way my favorite music hits me. I don’t think we should feel comfortable all the time. I want my music to make people feel human – laugh, cry, scream, fucking feel it all”, says Lewis – and that she did.

This Texas-born singer songwriter shows he’s poised to be a star in the making, bringing a blend of country roots with a whittled edge and some Honky Tonk flair.
Now based in Austin, Lively’s upbringing in southeast Texas provides a baseline of traditional country music, but Burn The Ground reaches beyond those boundaries – a mixed bag, capable of filling the dance floor with twirlers, earning mainstream radio play, and providing the perfect soundtrack for those lonely moments at a dimly lit bar with low hanging ceilings.

Oklahoma! is a production that, like Cleto, I admit I’ve never seen. However, I do recognize the nod to the 1943 musical from the cover art to the opening track on Kaitlin Butts’ newest album – Roadrunner! Beyond that, I will have to rely on the insights of others regarding its parallels & make a promise to myself that I will check that box on my next couch ridden rainy day.
“Every summer when I was a kid, my parents would take me to see a performance of ‘Oklahoma!’ at a local amphitheater, and I’ve felt such a strong connection to it my entire life. It’s a love story, but there’s also a murder and a little bit of an acid-trippy feel to it at times; it’s set in the same place where I come from. Once I got the idea for this album, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before, and it turned into something that completely encompasses who I am and what I love,” says Butts.
With 17 tracks, Roadrunner! offers a plethora of sonic jewels – from its title track about loving life on the road to a famous roadside Cactus Juice – so delicious that it just may save the world, and of course Butts’ already hit single Hunt You Down – a rollicking murder ballad about a cheating spouse.. Have you learned the dance yet?
Roadrunner! combines lyrical authenticity that’s dripping with wit & wry humor and a country sound so full of stories, it’s capable of one day becoming a musical itself. I’ve seen him sing, watched him run for governor, and stood in the same room as nothing more than a couple of people enjoying the music before us.. But even then – and still – he’s always seemed somewhat like a fictitious character, too large for real life. We lost a great one today – grabbing those wings and Flyin’ Down The Freeway.

Joy Broyles (bass) and Pete Posie (pedal steel) joined two years ago during Katie Mae’s first live session at Max Harm’s Garage Sessions.. the group immediately clicked and have been sharing the stage ever since.
Katie Mae & The Lubrication already have a strong presence in the Phoenix Honky Tonk scene and are set to hit the road this week & spread their sound across the southern U.S.

The new album, Broken Hearted Blue is an old wooden dance floor and a caged in stage all wrapped up in one. Known for their high-energy live shows, as you listen to this latest album, you can envision Patrick Swayze(or Jake Gyllenhaal for the younger crowd) kicking ass & cleaning house as The Spurs play on and the dancers twirl amidst the madness.
Having close ties with punk rock pioneers the Wipers(longtime Spurs drummer Sam Henry of the Wipers was taken by cancer in 2022) & sharing the stage with emerging country legends like Charley Crockett, Jenny Don’t & The Spurs sit at the intersection of honky-tonk and rock ‘n’ roll. Jenny Don’t wanted to escape her roots as a punk-rock artist to become more versatile and expand their listening audience. Over the course of 12-plus years and a dozen albums, they’ve done just that!

Weaving between & threading the needle of Americana and star-gazing Indie Folk-Rock, Angus & Julia Stone have released their latest effort – Cape Forestier. It’s versatile, but simple and so easy to listen to.. showcasing why the duo has maintained a steady stroll in the music industry for so long.
After a short hiatus to pursue their own paths and make individual music, the siblings have reunited to create this delightful record. Angus & Julia Stone have been making music together for 20 years – starting in their father’s living room and coming full circle to Cape Forestier, the name of a boat that holds significant childhood memories for each of them.
Angus has found a new home with a home studio tucked away in the hinterland of the Northern Rivers. It was here at Sugarcane Mountain Studios that much of Cape Forestier was recorded. The rest of the album came together from afar, with Angus recording on the road from hotel rooms while touring with his solo project, Dope Lemon, and his portable recording gear, and Julia between Berlin and her new home in Tasmania.
Despite spending long periods apart, their familial chemistry stands strong on Cape Forestier. They pick up like old friends, yet are even more in tune with one another as kin. This dynamic has resulted in an album that is both emotionally powerful and their most stripped-down and intimate work to date. Also my favorite to date.. They’ve always been quite good at evoking emotions, it’s a hallmark of their music – and Cape Forestier is no exception. Both Angus & Julia, capable of carrying a song on their own, but never competing for the spot light – rather just complimenting one another.
